Growing art

Although Transmediale didn't really deliver in my opinion, there was still enough there to make up an excuse to go to the real thing. Roman Kirschner's Roots was intriguing to watch:It reminded me alot about Andy Lomas's complex pictures and movies, powered by a Diffusion-limited aggregation algorithm: Something that obiously inspired other artists aswell:
Alas, new media art can only go so far. Nature is always one step a head.

This is definitly an interesting area. In fact, I'm currently working on getting on a project were we'll animate a huge monster plant that grows instead of moves. My thoughts about this is currently a bit undefined but what most CG plants miss the fact that plants, like animals, adapts to their surroundings. It is to much focus on the feel of growth that people forgets connecting the single plant to the it's surroundings. The only time I've seen this is in Arkadiusz Rekitas design: http://www.highend3d.com/articles/references/Ecosystem-simulation-in-Houdini-28.html

A couple of months ago I've also worked on an Andy Lomas inspired project, applying DLA as process along a font outline in order to grow type. More info on my blog (scroll further down for movie).

Thanks for reference to the skin condition. Although v.scary - and one can only feel for the man - it's equally inspirational to see the things possible in nature...
